Counting the Pieces by S.R. Grosslight

This illustration was created by Kim Vanderheiden for the book THE COST OF GOLD, poetry by S.R. Grosslight, published by Quelquefois Press in 2002.  In the book, an offset print of the original pencil drawing was used in the centerfold. In this broadside, the pencil drawing has been transferred to a solar plate, inked ‘a la poupée’ and printed on an intaglio press. The image illustrates three poems. The puzzle piece sky and world, children, and grandmother are drawn from the words of “To Be Assigned.” The man exiting at the right side of the page wearing ‘Groucho’ glasses came from, “Seven Ways to Leave a Marriage,” and the couple standing in the field looking over their failed farm illustrates, “Late and Never.” The book was letterpress printed and hand bound in a limited edition of 100 with a handmade paper cover, or A-Z with a wood cover.  The broadside has the poem “To Be Assigned” printed in letterpress beside the image, and was produced in an edition of 30, 16 X 8 prints. An unframed copy can be purchased for $250.
