Open Studio 2005 - "O Immortal Bridge"

From 1999 to 2005, Vanderheiden participated in ProArts East Bay Open Studios. Each year, limited edition handmade, letterpress printed invitations were made for clients and supporters. This is the first of of those invitations. It was hand set in Sabon Antiqua at Quelquefois Press and contains a double monotype image glued to a letterpress trifold.

The monotypes were created by painting with watercolors onto small plexiglass plates. When you print a monotype you lose your image. The plate surface is flat and there is no matrix on the plate to allow you to repeat the image for an edition, hence the root "mono." At the time, the Griffin table top etching press was a recent purchase. The small format of these plates helped Vanderheiden become more comfortable as a printer, as well as more willing to experiment as an artist.
