When describing this piece, we call it an "interactive book sculpture." The first yellow panel invites guests to the Open Studio event, and the second yellow panel provides the colophon, edition number, and signature. The remaining panels alternate between describing works that will be displayed, and describing ways to play with the invitation.
The photos to the left show the work in "Landscape" form, as well as "Earthquake," "Albatross," and "Starfish." Additional forms not shown here include the "Jellyfish," in which the recipient spreads out the tentacles and scoots the piece back and forth in the manner of jellyfish movement, and a suggestion to wear the book as a hairpiece or wig.
Papers used include Fabriano Ingres, Hahnemuhle Bugra, Echizen Washi Saikou, and two commercial stocks. The colors were chosen to compliment a series of brightly colored paintings of desert scenes from Morocco that were to be shown. At the time this was created we did not have die cutting capabilities or even a guillotine, so all of the cutting had to be done by hand or with a 12" paper cutter. Many thanks to Katherine, Kitty, Matt, and other friends and clients who helped with the cutting! The edition size was 150.
From 1999 to 2005, Vanderheiden participated in ProArts East Bay Open Studios. Each year, limited edition handmade, letterpress printed invitations were made for clients and supporters. These invitataions are no longer available through the studio and are now collectors items.
